Parents are allowing their children to play on computers and tablets

More and more parents are allowing their children to play on computers and tablets as they think children should learn technology skills. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Solution

Using computers daily can negatively affect children as they may become less active, have less face-to-face interaction and may get addicted to computer games. To a large extent, I agree with the statement, and I will discuss in this essay why a responsible use of computers is necessary for children.

Computer addiction is the first problem why people want children not to use computers daily. Many computer games have been released that are making children stick to computers for hours. This trend is making children less active. They may not go outside to play as much and instead stay indoors in front of the computer. This can lead to children becoming overweight and obese as they are not getting enough exercise. The lack of real interaction is another problem arising from children’s regular use of computers. Despite using digital communication and video calling software, a real social interaction holds more value.

However, parents should understand that avoiding computers is no longer a feasible solution since schools and other educational institutions are using technologies that make computers mandatory daily. For example, writing an assignment or attending an online class will require children to use computers or tablets. Therefore, despite using computers and tablets every day, parents should ensure that their children are using these devices for genuine and academic purposes only.

In conclusion, computer addiction, lack of social interaction and lack of physical activities are some of the consequences of regular use of computers. Parents have to make sure that their children use tablets and computers for reasonable purposes and amounts of time.
