Some countries are struggling with an increase in the rate of crime. Many people think that having more police on the streets is the only way to reduce these increasing levels of crime. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
IELTS Essay on Crime: Model Answer
In many countries, the crime rate has been a major problem. Some are of the view that raising the number of police officers is a good idea to curb the crime issue. I agree with the idea of deploying more police. However, I also believe that there are a lot of other approaches to handle the matter.
Initially, there is a widespread notion that if authorities deploy more police to regions with a high proportion of criminals, the security situation in those areas will likely remain stable. A lack of thorough supervision is the fundamental reason criminals are able to engage in illicit activity. By increasing the number of police officers, more violent crimes are likely to be stopped from the start. Secondly, the increased police presence on the streets would allow locals to report potentially criminal activity in order to dissuade criminal activity. When security agents are far from residential areas, it takes longer for residents to report a crime. As a result, authorities would be unable to intervene in a timely manner, resulting in negative outcomes.
Despite the aforementioned considerations, I believe that there are several approaches to reducing crime. Government application of technology is one of the effective techniques. By installing CCTV systems, the streets will be under constant surveillance 24 hours a day. Therefore, the deployment of security troops is unnecessary. Other measures that authorities might take to address criminal concerns include fostering economic growth to maintain social order. When a large number of jobs are generated, the unemployment rate, which is one of the primary factors contributing to the rise in crime, is likely to decrease. Therefore, individuals continue attempting to achieve their goals without committing crimes.
In conclusion, despite the fact that increasing the number of police officers on the roadways is an excellent strategy to combat crime, I believe that alternate approaches such as installing CCTV cameras and increasing job opportunities for the unemployed might also be effective.
